“I really needed to see the money in my bank before I can really believe it and determine what I will do with the winnings,” he said in a news release. Roussel heard that someone in his village on the Acadian Peninsula had won the big million dollar prize, when his wife got a call from a friend asking if she knew who it was. The unexpected winner went to his local store to get his ticket checked, and found out he was THE Le Goulet’s big winner.

Then he went straight to his son’s house to share the news. Roussel says his five children are also in the lobster fishery and one of his sons couldn’t believe he was a winner. “I walked in and said to my son that I was going to buy myself a brand new truck and pay for it in cash because he could,” Roussel said. “He didn’t believe me, so I told him it was because I had won $1M.” He really thought i was making it up,’  he said to me. Show me the ticket, so his dad did, he took the ticket and he went on the computer to check the numbers for himself.”

Roussel is the 2nd biggest fisherman winner of the Lotto 6/49. In early August, another retired fisherman from the same village won $666,380 while playing Lotto 6/49.

Bon Truong is from Edmonton, Alberta. He claims he predicted the win of $60 million on October 26, 2018, Lotto Max jackpot the morning after the numbers were drawn. Truong’s $60 million jackpot win is tied as the largest-ever Lotto Max winner in Alberta’s history. A couple won $60 million back in September 2017.

Rather than claiming his prize immediately, he waited almost 10 months later because “he felt overwhelmed by the magnitude of his win”.

As soon as he saw the winning numbers, Truong went to the store and had the clerk print them. Additionally, he took the numbers home and double-checked them for hours.

A Canadian janitor, Vito Halasan, has become a millionaire with British Columbia Lottery after winning $7 million CAD. However, the man does not wish to leave his job of sweeping floors!

Just a few days after celebrating his 58th birthday, Vito Halasan matched all six numbers to win the jackpot from the April 27 lottery draw.

Mr. Halasan talks about how he struggles with his vision and thought his eyes were playing tricks on him. “I have really blurry vision, so I had to hold the ticket right up to my face,” Halasan said in a release. “I couldn’t believe it.

His daughter didn’t believe him and had to see for herself. “We had to check online several times,” she said. He called her in a panic after realizing what had happened. “He sat me down at the table,” his daughter said. “And then he whispered really quietly to me that he won $7 million [in Canadian dollars].”

Halasan’s family moved to Canada from the Philippines in 2009. Now, he says he can provide the life he has dreamed of for his three children and four grandchildren. He plans to buy them their dream house that they’ve always wanted.

Jun-Chul Chung, 68, and his daughter Kathleen Chung, 36, were sentenced to seven and four years in prison.

Her brother, Kenneth Chung, who ran the convenience store in a Toronto suburb where his father worked, was given a 10-month sentence.

The real ticket winner eventually got his C$12.5m earnings – plus interest.

“I’m just really happy,” winner Daniel Campbell said in 2011, when the winnings were restored.

He split the jackpot with six of his colleagues who were part of a lottery pool.

“It’s a big deal for myself and my family and I can maybe help them out and take care of them. I’m a little overwhelmed; a lot overwhelmed.”

Justice Douglas Gray ordered the father and daughter to each pay C$2.3m. This is the amount remaining on the winning ticket after approximately C$8m of assets were seized by the courts.

Moreover, the court found the fraudsters had used the winnings to buy mansions and luxury cars.

What happened?

Mr Campbell got the ticket in 2003 from Variety Plus in Burlington, Ontario. This was after a previously purchased ticket won him five “free plays”.

Kenneth Chung managed the store, but it was his father Jun-Chul Chung who validated the five free plays.

Upon discovering that one of them was the winner, Jun-Chul stole it and returned the four losing tickets to Mr. Campbell.

Then his daughter Kathleen Chung cashed the ticket in at the prize center.

An investigator for the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, which runs the province’s lottery, discovered her brother owned the Variety Plus where the ticket was validated. But this took place months later!

But the OLG paid the ticket out to Chung anyway.

The “shocking” fraud was highlighted in a 2007 government report on “suspicious wins” in the provincial-run lottery. The report called out the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation for not doing enough to stop fraud perpetrated by lottery ticket sellers.

Furthermore, the government estimates lottery retailers, employees and their families have taken home $198m in prizes over the past 13 years.

“They had a real policy of coddling up with retailers and retailers exploited that, and many were wily and got away with that,” former Ontario’s ombudsman Andre Marin told CBC News.

The gaming corporation has since cracked down on retailer fraud and police have charged a number of winners.

Moral of the story, don’t steal lottery tickets! They won’t be valid!

Neighbors of lottery winners have a higher probability of bankruptcy owing to increased conspicuous consumption, financial risk-taking, and borrowing. This is according to researchers at the University of Alberta in Canada and Georgetown University in the US.

“Using lottery winnings as plausibly exogenous variations in the relative income of peers, we find that the dollar magnitude of a lottery win of one neighbor increases subsequent borrowing and bankruptcies among other neighbors,” a paper detailing the research states.

Lottery Neighbors Trying To Keep Up

The paper references the idiom ‘keeping up with the Joneses’. For example, people attempt to match the high spending of their peers in order to not appear socially or culturally inferior.

The researchers studied data of 7,337 lottery winners and bankruptcy filers in an unnamed Canadian province between 2004 and 2014. The study focussed on winnings lower than C$150,00, as larger winners tended to move away to more prosperous neighborhoods.

Their findings concluded that the larger the lottery winnings of one individual in a small neighborhood, the more subsequent bankruptcies there would be amongst individuals in that neighborhood.

This was due to the neighbors of lottery winners increasing their spending on items visible to their wealthy neighbors. This includes items like cars and housing renovations. An earlier version of the study found that spending did not increase on non-visible items, like furniture.

“We also found that borrowing in the entire neighborhood increases with amounts,” the paper adds. “These findings are consistent with additional risk-taking and debt accumulation to finance conspicuous consumption. This leads to financial difficulties and bankruptcy for nonwinning peers.”

The researchers suggest the study could prompt further research into whether wealth inequality in the broader economy could lead to the kind of financial distress that precipitates financial crises, such as those that occurred in 1929 and 2008.

The 31 winners all worked together at a refinery in the appropriately named town Come By Chance. The tiny town has a population of just 228, located in the easterly province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

A father and son, twin brothers and a married couple are members of the winning group. The town of Avondale, population 600, has eight new millionaires – three of them on the same street.

The group, who are also members of the same trade union and have been buying tickets together for three months, will split one of the largest jackpots in Canadian history, each receiving C$1.9m (£1m).

“We throw in $5 each, so we had $155 worth of tickets,” said Sherry Moore Hickey. She purchased the group’s winning ticket from a petrol station.

Imagine your family home being completely destroyed and losing all of your precious belongings. This is what happened to Ben Pendergast and his family during the Alberta wildfires in May 2016.

Bill Pendergast has spent the last two years rebuilding his home. The house burnt down when a wildfire raged through Fort McMurray, Alberta. Now, he is $1 million richer and able to finish restoring his family home thanks to the Atlantic Lotto.

Pendergast, 50, bought the $3 Lotto 6/49 ticket earlier this month when he stopped at the local convenience store in Newfoundland and Labrador on the way to visit his ill father.

“Dad called and asked me to stop on my way back to the hospital and pick him up a cold 7-Up,” said Pendergast in a statement from the Atlantic Lottery.

He didn’t think much about the ticket he bought until the next day when he was awakened by his aunt, who was in a frenzy.

“‘Bill, did you buy a lottery ticket? Someone won a million dollars’ she told me,” he said.

He pulled out his lottery ticket, checked his numbers against the winning numbers on his phone and couldn’t believe what he saw.

“I called my wife, Carrie, in Fort McMurray and she booked a flight immediately,” Pendergast said. “This is all like a dream.”

Pendergast plans on finishing rebuilding his home and furnishing it, but he does want one special gift.

“I have always wanted a Mustang, and I will finally have one, I’m 100% sure of that.”

Lottery Winnings Used To Do Good!

Rachel Lapierre, a former Miss Quebec, set up a charity with her lottery winnings back in 2013.

The Canadian always loved volunteering, and after running her own modelling agency and working as a nurse, she was looking for a way to follow her idol, Mother Theresa, and dedicate her life to charity.

Then fate came knocking when she won a lifetime salary of C$1,000 (£605) a week in the Quebecois lottery “Gagnant à vie”, or “winner for life”.

At first I couldn’t believe it, but I didn’t celebrate or shout it from the rooftop because I had made a promise to the universe and I was determined to keep it.

“I wanted to do something I loved for the rest of my life. I wanted to help others,” she says.

It took Ms Lapierre only two months to quit her nursing job and launch her own charity, Le Book Humanitaire.

Her non-profit organisation, which is located in Saint-Jerome, about 60km north-west of Montreal, uses social media to connect those in need with people who can help.

On its Facebook page, which has 22,000 followers, those who are struggling can let the community know about their plight.

At the same time, members of the public can advertise services or goods they want to donate.

“Let’s say that you have clothes to give away. We will put you in contact with a family that needs those clothes and will allow you to go give them yourself,” Ms Lapierre explains.

“It’s not only about material things. You might end up driving a cancer patient to a doctor’s appointment.”

Her modelling career inspired her to set up her own modelling school in 1984, to teach young women how to build careers in the industry. It had about 10 staff.

“Running my own business taught me about accounting and how to manage employees,” Ms Lapierre says.

She closed the business in the late 1980s to focus on bringing up her four children but also dedicated herself to voluntary work – making numerous trips with humanitarian organisations to places like India and Haiti.

It was this passion that led her to set up Le Book Humanitaire four years ago.

This year, the charity has made 15,000 “direct actions” in Quebec, ranging from furnishing an apartment for a family of Syrian refugees, to finding a home for a homeless mother who had just given birth.

She has also funded the organisation – which has 10 full-time volunteers and its own board – entirely by herself, investing $70,000 to date.

“This weekly C$1,000 I get from the lottery allows me to not go to work anymore and finance my organisation,” she says.

“I pay for things such as our office rent and other administrative costs.”

There are limits to Ms Lapierre’s budget, though. After she was interviewed by a popular Quebecois television station earlier this year, Le Book Humanitaire saw a huge increase in its Facebook followers, from around 4,000 to more than 20,000.

It led to an influx of requests for help, as well as donations, and the charity has struggled to keep up.
